Abstract

This presentation is all about the “why?” underlying key design guidelines that we are taught at the basic level of design education. Mrs. Sridatta will delve into the psychological principles that are integral factors in how we design interfaces, interactions, applications, and embodied artifacts such as robots. Does the understanding of psychological principles help in approaching humans from a different perspective? How are the basic principles of memory, analytical thinking, and problem-solving all consolidated to make up for what we refer to as cognitive load- with a single term?

Topics covered

Cognitive load in user design refers to the mental effort users exert when interacting with a product. Minimizing it enhances usability, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Psychological Principles in Design involve understanding human perception, cognition, and behavior to create visually appealing, intuitive, and effective designs that resonate with users on a subconscious level, enhancing engagement and usability.

Human robot interaction studies how people and robots communicate, collaborate, and coexist. It aims to improve usability, trust, and efficiency in robotics.

Interaction design focuses on crafting user-friendly digital experiences, emphasizing intuitive interfaces, efficient workflows, and meaningful user engagement to enhance usability.

About Sridatta chatteree (Ph.d.)

"Teaching machines how to behave."

Sridatta is a professional interaction and experience designer with two years of industrial work experience in designing human-machine interactions of various semi-autonomous platforms. She designs with a focus on long-term use and acceptance.

She holds a Doctorate in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) with a Masters (and Bachelors) degree in Psychology. Utilizing her unique skillset, she delves into understanding the psychological explanations of "why?" people do what they do with interactive technology.

She has been fortunate to be called on by the Department of Science and Technology and later on, the Prime Minister's Office in 2016 and 2017 as a recognition of her doctoral work.
